The Ascension - Untitled EP

Review by Mark

This one isn’t for the punk/rock fans, The Ascension are an electro/guitar three piece band, which have a very intriguing sound. For those of you who yearn for a piece of music to get lost in, this is it. You can get carried away with the guitar work as you would with Wish You Were Hear (Pink Floyd, not the TV show). But don’t mistake this for a purely prog recorded by this comparison, there is a very dark element to this music. But I’m talking about the British definition of dark, not the Norwegian. There are no similarities to Marduk or Immortal, Joy Division and The Smiths are the beautifully depressing influences behind the vocals. Track two, Shallow End even starts off sounding a bit like Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

First Sight (track one of two) starts off sounding like background music from Twin Peaks, the rest of the track sounds gloomy enough to be part of any other David Lynch project.

The Ascension are without a doubt one of the most uplifting comes downs you will ever hear.
