Che – Sanders Park, Bromsgrove Carnival – 27/06/09

Review by Danni

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you a female fronted rock-esque band that sound nothing like Paramore. Halle-bloody-lujah!

On the day of the Bromsgrove carnival, I made my way down to the park, strategically positioned myself in optimal sunlight in front of the annual temporary stage and prepared myself for an afternoon of chillaxin’, cheesy cover bands, too much ice cream and everything else that my dead-end home town’s carnival day normally offers. However, I almost suffered the same fate as the late Michael Jackson (R.I.P) when I discovered Che were on the live music stage line-up. Being locally renowned and having caught Che live before, I was surprised but stoked to discover they were about to take to the stage and add a little originality and integrity to the line-up.

In a nutshell, Che consists of four guys and a girl and fall into Rock/Pop/Alt genre. Although, as their music has more substance to it than a 3 chords and a catchy lyric or two they manage to escape the cliché 14 year old girl fan base associated with the genres and subsequently make for a deservedly vaster appeal.

Front woman Lydia’s powerful vocals really drove their songs forward while the boys in the back kept everything in check musically to make for a sound, honest and raw performance. All are qualities often lost in the thick of the currently saturated music market of ephemeral bands that too heavily rely upon one-liners and auto-tune to become ‘successful’.

Che’s set included a deliverance of ‘Something new’, a song which just demands a little bit of air drumming for good measure during the drum fills. A performance of the equally strong number ‘What they’ll say’ was also served up amongst other sunny tracks that went hand in hand with the scorching weather and, as the audience were informed by bare foot members of the band, the blisteringly hot stage floor too.

After proclaiming that today was more an anchovy-less ceaser salad day than a cheese day, Che wrapped things up before possibly performing the quickest load up ever known to man in order to dash off to their second show of the day headlining a Stourbridge venue.
